Prior to discussing about angiograms, you should first have idea about cardiac catheterization which is a diagnostic procedure that provides detailed, x-ray pictures of the heart and blood vessels. Angiograms are when pictures are taken with contrast dye during this procedure. Alongside this, interventional procedures to correct problems that are found can also be performed. A cardiac catheterization is performed by a specially trained cardiologist, called an interventional cardiologist. The procedures are performed in a special room in a hospital called “cath lab” or “catheterization laboratory”.
Prior to going ahead with the discussion, here’s some information on child CPR procedures. Every individual is at equal risk for cardiac emergencies like a cardiac arrest or heart attack, even children and infants. A victim would require immediate treatment for survival. The most effective form of treatment in this regard is proper administration of the life-saving CPR procedures. The techniques comprise chest compressions and rescue breaths. Always select an accredited training center for acquiring training such as the AHA certified CPR Kansas City. Both theoretical and practical training are imparted to the students. Angiogram/Cardiac Catheterization in Children:
1. When compared with adult coronary catheterization procedure, a pediatric or adult congenital catheterization procedure typically takes longer, about 2-3 hours. The patient is sedated with medication by mouth or by injection prior to beginning with the procedure. Sometimes, an IV (intravenous line) is placed into a vein in the patient’s arm through which fluids and medications are provided. A child is given more medications if he or she becomes anxious during the procedure, the medication helps to relax.
2. After the child relaxes, lidocaine (a local anesthetic) is injected by a doctor to desensitize the areas where the vessels will be entered. The procedure is typically painless apart from the initial needle prick to inject lidocaine.
3. The vessels doctors most commonly use to insert a catheter to perform the procedure are femoral vein and artery in the groin and threads it through the vessels to the heart, veins and peripheral arteries.
4. A patient never feels catheter or any pain during the catheterization procedure as there are no nerves in the arteries. There is a wide range of specialized catheters in different sizes that are available to be used for patients of all sizes – from newborn babies to adults.
5. Only when the catheter is properly positioned that the cardiologist injects a contrast dye through it into the heart and its arteries. It is the x-ray camera that helps the physician guide the catheter to the heart. Dye injection does not arise any kind of feeling in people although some may feel a sensation of warmth in the chest, lightheadedness or nausea.
It is important for parents to prepare their children for a cardiac catheterization and ways to care for them after leaving the hospital. Consult with the doctor on this matter.
